FRESH off their triumphant win at the prestigious Pumula Royal Arts and Community Awards (PRACA), the Bulawayo Children’s Choir is demonstrating that complacency has no place in their repertoire.

Just weeks after clinching the coveted “Best Duo/Group” accolade – their maiden PRACA victory – the talented young ensemble is already back in the rehearsal room, preparing for an ambitious year ahead.

The choir’s first rehearsal of 2026 is set for Saturday, January 24, signalling a swift return to the hard work and dedication that earned them recognition.

Creative Director Trevor Mawaka emphasised that the award is a springboard, not a finish line.
“Winning at PRACA was a tremendous honour and a validation of our children’s incredible talent and commitment, but we see this as just the beginning. Our focus is firmly on the future, pushing our boundaries, and reaching even greater heights in 2026,” Mawaka stated.

This drive for growth coincides with an exciting opportunity for the city’s youth.
The choir is actively opening its doors to new members.

Mawaka extended a warm invitation: “If any child loves singing, this is a fantastic chance for them to grow their vocal skills in a supportive environment, make lasting friendships, and experience the pure joy of making music together. We welcome new voices to join our journey.”

The year ahead promises significant activity for the choir, moving beyond resting on its laurels.

Key projects already lined up include the Dance Away My Sorrows video reshoot, where the choir will be revisiting their popular track, this time collaborating with Creative Culture, a renowned group of talented child dancers.

The reshoot aims to create a vibrant and dynamic visual representation of the song.

A major strategic focus by the choir will be on enhancing their live performance experience and forging collaborations with Harare-based artistes.

This initiative is designed to propel the choir onto the national stage, broadening their audience and impact beyond Bulawayo.

Mawaka stressed the importance of commitment for both existing and prospective members to achieve these goals.

“Regular attendance at rehearsals is absolutely vital. It’s through consistent practice and teamwork that we maintain our standards, learn new material, and prepare for these exciting projects and performances,” he said.

The message from the Bulawayo Children’s Choir is clear: the applause from their PRACA win has faded, replaced by the sound of focused preparation and ambitious planning.

Their sights are set on bigger stages, new collaborations, and welcoming fresh talent into their musical family. — @MbuleloMpofu
