A BULAWAYO-based company has been fined US$400 after it was caught illegally trading in bleaching creams worth nearly US$1 000.

Luzern Enterprises Private Limited, represented in court by its saleslady, Simelweyinkosi Kanye of Bellevue suburb, was convicted of selling unregistered medicines by Bulawayo magistrate Mr Maxwell Ncube.

The prosecutor, Mr Mehluli Ndlovu, told the court that on September 3, detectives from the CID Drugs and Narcotics unit in Bulawayo received a tip-off about the illegal trade. The detectives raided the company’s shop along Josiah Chinamano Street in the city centre and discovered dozens of unregistered skin-lightening products.

In total, police recovered 176 × 500ml bottles of Power White Extra Whitening Cream, 328 × 135ml Carotene Cream, 126 × 330ml Carotene Cream and 780 × 3ml bottles of Tsunami.

When asked to produce a valid licence authorising the sale of bleaching creams, the company failed to do so, leading to the seizure of the goods.
