BULAWAYO City Council (BCC) is planning to set up a waste-to-energy plant, as it races to contain the current challenges faced by the city in refuse collection and management.
Bulawayo City fathers admit that solid waste is a millstone and are seeking an urgent solution to combat this challenge.
Addressing journalists on the sidelines of a tour of Geo Pomona Waste Management Plant in Harare yesterday, Bulawayo City Council deputy mayor, Councillor Edwin Ndlovu, said the city is keen to address its current waste management challenges.
“We are very impressed by the model that we have seen here at Geo Pomona and would be looking at setting up a similar plant in Bulawayo,” he said.
“This is one of the key points that we focused on at the Investment Conference that we had in Harare.”
Geo Pomona Waste Management chief executive officer and executive chairman, Dr Dilesh Nguwaya, said his firm is waiting for a response to commence work.
“I am glad that Bulawayo City Council is impressed and wants to replicate this initiative in their municipality,” he said.
“It is something that we have proposed to them and now we await their response.”
BCC’s familiarisation tour at the Geo-Pomona plant provided critical insights into managing urban environments.
Meanwhile, Dr Nguwaya said Geo Pomona Waste Management will soon be ISO certified.
