BULAWAYO deputy mayor Councillor Edwin Ndlovu and his two co-accused have appeared in court for the continuation of their remand hearing, with the court granting the State’s application to place them on remand as they now proceed with their bail application.
Cllr Ndlovu, Cllr Ntandoyenkosi Ndlovu and former councillor Alderman Rodney Jele are facing allegations of extortion in a case that has attracted considerable attention in the city.
The trio appeared before Bulawayo magistrate Mr Isheunesu Matova on Monday, where the State opposed their release from remand and sought to have them further remanded while investigations and the prosecution of the matter proceed.
The court ultimately granted the State’s request for remand, paving the way for the accused to formally pursue bail.
The three are being represented by their lawyers, who are expected to argue that their continued detention is not warranted and that they are suitable candidates for bail.
The State is, however, opposed to bail, relying on its concerns regarding the seriousness of the allegations and other factors it may place before the court.
The allegations against the councillors stem from claims of extortion involving a businessman, with the State alleging that the accused used their positions and influence to unlawfully demand money.
Court proceedings are underway.
