THE City of Bulawayo is donating 20 000 bricks and 20 beasts towards the hosting of the 46th Independence Day celebrations scheduled for Maphisa in Matabeleland South Province in April.
The donation forms part of a broader mobilisation drive by the Government and other stakeholders to ensure the successful hosting of the national event, which will see thousands of people gathering in Maphisa to commemorate Zimbabwe’s independence.
According to the latest full council report, Town Clerk Mr Christopher Dube reported to the General Purposes Committee on 20 February that the local authority had received a request from the Ministry of Local Government and Public Works.
“As part of the Government of Zimbabwe’s preparations for the hosting of the National Independence Celebrations for the year 2026, scheduled to take place in Maphisa, Matabeleland South Province, stakeholders have been mobilised to contribute towards the successful hosting of this national event,” reads part of the correspondence.
“In view of the foregoing, the Ministry kindly requests your Local Authority to provide a total of twenty thousand (20 000) red bricks to support the construction of related works being undertaken.”
The ministry said the building materials would assist in accelerating preparations for the historic national gathering.
“The provision of these materials will significantly contribute towards the timely completion of the works and enhance service delivery under this critical work stream,” reads the correspondence.
In addition to the bricks, the local authority was also requested to donate 20 beasts as part of logistical support for the celebrations.
Council’s General Purposes Committee considered the request and acceded to the proposal, paving the way for the local authority to make the contribution towards the national event.
Zimbabwe marks its Independence Day annually on 18 April, with the commemorations rotating across provinces as part of Government’s devolution and inclusive national development agenda.
This year’s celebrations will be held under the theme Zim@46 –— Unity and Development Towards Vision 2030.
The theme dovetails with the Government’s broader national development agenda, which seeks to transform Zimbabwe into an upper-middle-income economy by 2030 through inclusive growth, infrastructure development and social cohesion.
