BULAWAYO Athletics Board (Bab) chairperson Watson Madanyika says the province is in the final stages of assembling a strong team for the upcoming National Youth Games set for Marondera in August.
Madanyika revealed that a series of selection meets held over the past few months have helped identify promising young athletes expected to carry Bulawayo’s hopes at the national competition.
One of the latest selection events was held at White City Stadium on Saturday, where aspiring athletes competed for places in the provincial squad.
He said the board was encouraged by the level of participation and talent that emerged during the selection process, expressing confidence that Bulawayo will field a competitive athletics team capable of challenging for honours.
“We have been conducting several selection meets over the past months and we are now finalising the team for the Youth Games in Marondera. The response from athletes has been encouraging and we have managed to identify a number of talented youngsters,” said Madanyika.
He added that the board’s focus is not only on participation, but also on building a team that can proudly represent the province on the national stage.
“Preparations are aimed at building a competitive team that will represent the province with honour. We want our athletes to go there fully prepared and ready to compete at the highest level,” he said.
The National Youth Games are expected to bring together talented young athletes from across the country, with provinces using the platform to nurture future stars. For Bulawayo, the Games also present an opportunity to continue rebuilding athletics structures and strengthening development pathways for emerging athletes.
