BULAWAYO City Council Finance and Development Committee chairperson, Councillor Mpumelelo Moyo, has welcomed the launch of the Presidential Borehole Scheme in the city, describing it as a timely intervention that will help ease the long-standing water challenges affecting residents and businesses.
Speaking during the commissioning of the scheme in Cowdray Park on Friday, Clr Moyo said the initiative addresses one of Bulawayo’s most pressing concerns — water security.
He said the city has endured persistent water shortages over the years due to a combination of climate change, recurrent droughts, population growth, industrial expansion and increasing pressure on ageing infrastructure.
“The development speaks to a matter that affects every household, every business and every institution in Bulawayo — the issue of water security.
As we all know, Bulawayo has endured persistent water challenges over many years. The reality of water shedding continues to affect residents, schools, hospitals, industries and the broader economy of our city,” said Cllr Moyo.
He said water remained the lifeblood of any city, underpinning domestic life, healthcare delivery and economic productivity.
“No city can function effectively without reliable access to water. Families require water for daily living, hospitals require water to save lives, and industries require water for productivity and economic growth. Every practical intervention that seeks to alleviate this burden on our residents deserves recognition and support,” he said.
Clr Moyo expressed appreciation for the Presidential Borehole Scheme spearheaded by Presidential adviser Dr Paul Tungwarara under the guidance of President Mnangagwa.
