BULAWAYO Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC) co-ordinator Sam Dzvimbu believes there is room for talent growth after the province came second in the just ended Youth Education through Sport (YES) Games held in Hwange.
Bulawayo were second behind Mashonaland West after scooping three medals.
The netball and football teams scooped gold medals while the volleyball team bagged silver.
“The province has improved a lot in their respective disciplines because the boys’ volleyball team climbed one step up the ladder and finished fourth.
“The girls’ volleyball team moved from sixth position to second this year, while the boy’s football team were the overall winners.
“This is truly an improvement from their third place finish last year,” said Dzvimbu.
“The willingness to compete in the district games where the provincial team is selected shows that people now understand what the YES programme is all about, as they are more than just sport.”
Teams from Bulawayo’s Mzilikazi and Bulawayo Central districts represented the province, with Mgoqo Primary School contributing the netball and girls’ football teams.
Eveline High School represented the province in the girls’ volleyball and Mpumelelo Primary provided the boys team. Sizane High fielded the boy’s football team.
This year’s competition ran under the theme “Unethical practices, a barrier to youth development through sport”.
Next year’s edition of the competition is set for the Midlands province.
