THE Ministry of Environment, Climate and Wildlife on Wednesday starts a three day Urban and Peri-Urban Resilience through Investment for Sustainable Ecosystems Project workshop at a Bulawayo hotel.

Commonly referred to as the Sustainable Cities Project, the project is being implemented under the Global Environment Facility (GEF-8) Sustainable Cities Programme and seeks to strengthen urban resilience through nature-based solutions, improved urban planning and sustainable ecosystem management.

“The project implemented under the Global Environment Facility (GEF-8) Sustainable Cities Programme aims to enhance urban resilience in Harare and Bulawayo through nature-based solutions, improved urban planning, and sustainable ecosystem management,” said the Ministry.

It said the project will align stakeholders, confirm implementation arrangements and officially commence project activities.

Authorities said the initiative will also provide a platform for engagement, knowledge sharing and strengthening collaboration among participating institutions.

The project comes at a time when cities are increasingly facing challenges linked to climate change, environmental degradation and rapid urbanisation, with authorities pushing for sustainable solutions to improve resilience and environmental management.

The official launch of the project is set to be held on Friday with a keynote address by the Minister of Environment, Climate and Environment Evelyn Ndlovu.
