Bulawayo man does one-man clean-up campaign

IN a rare display of civic responsibility, a man from Bulawayo embarked on a one-man clean-up campaign in the city centre on Wednesday, taking a stand against the growing litter problem.
Sinqobile Ndlovu (50), spent several hours alone, using his broom and pushcart to collect trash and debris from the streets and sidewalks along 9th Avenue, Leopold Takawira Avenue, Herbert Chitepo Street, and other areas in town.
He said his actions were motivated by a desire to make his city a cleaner and more pleasant place to live. Ndlovu believes that everyone has a responsibility to keep their surroundings clean and tidy, and he hopes his efforts will inspire others to take action.
“I am trying to ignite a fire in the people of Bulawayo to be conscious about their city. What I see daily hurts me as people throw litter wherever they want, leaving the city dirty,” said Ndlovu.
Ndlovu also made a passionate plea to vendors, urging them to sweep their workstations clean after selling their goods in town and not to rely solely on the Bulawayo City Council (BCC) to keep the city tidy.
Ndlovu also encouraged companies and shops in Bulawayo to install more dustbins throughout the city to promote cleanliness.
“I wish to visit all the cities in Zimbabwe and conduct clean-up campaigns, possibly with a team of other individuals interested in keeping our cities clean. While we call Bulawayo the ‘City of Kings,’ we are not living like kings. Bulawayo people, let us take ownership and keep our city clean. Let us be proud,” he said.
