A Bulawayo man has been jailed for 10 years for vandalising Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority (Zesa) copper cables.
Mugove Makanya (40) of Nkulumane 5 was arraigned before the West Commonage Magistrates’ Court for contravening the Electricity Act.
Allegations are that on September 11 at around 11 am, police officers received information that Mukanya had some copper and wanted to sell it.
The team proceeded to Nketa to investigate.
At 11.30 am, Mukanya arrived in a taxi and offloaded three sacks carrying copper bars and burnt underground armoured copper cables.
Police officers approached Mukanya, leading to his arrest.
They recovered copper bars and cables weighing 55,5 kg, all valued at US$1 110.
Meanwhile, the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe has said the theft or vandalism of ZETDC cables attracts a mandatory sentence of 10 years imprisonment.
