A BULAWAYO man has been arrested for allegedly stealing scrap metal and foam rubber worth US$2 520 from the Zupco depot in Kelvin North.

Muziwakhe Nyathi (55) appeared before Western Commonage magistrate Mr Archie Wochiwunga yesterday, facing theft charges. He pleaded guilty and was remanded in custody to July 31 for sentencing.

The complainant, Zupco, was represented in court by Ms Sylvia Kandiero (42), a security officer.

The prosecutor, Mr Tafara Dzimbanhete, said on July 13, at around 5.30PM, Nyathi and two unidentified accomplices allegedly entered the Zupco premises through a damaged fence.

“While inside, they stole scrap metal and foam rubber. Security officers on duty spotted them and gave chase,” said Mr Dzimbanhete.

Nyathi was apprehended while attempting to flee and handed over to the police. The stolen property was recovered. His two accomplices managed to escape and police have since launched a manhunt.

In an unrelated matter, a 33-year-old Bulawayo man appeared in court for allegedly attacking his fellow tenant with a hammer, striking him several times on the head.

Mbongeni Ndlovu from Pumula East appeared before Western Commonage magistrate Mrs Sibongile Marondedze, facing attempted murder charges. He was remanded in custody to July 25, pending a medical report.

The prosecutor, Mr Milton Moyo, said the incident occurred in Pumula East at around 9PM.

The court heard that the complainant, Lucky Moyo (28), was sitting in his room with his wife when Ndlovu, who was allegedly intoxicated, stormed into the room and started shouting at him.

“He accused Moyo of disrespecting him. He then went back to his own room, returned with a hammer, and struck the complainant several times on the head.”

The attack left Moyo with deep cuts and a swollen eye. He was rushed to Mpilo Central Hospital for treatment. A report was made to the police, leading to Ndlovu’s arrest.
