THE Bulawayo Mayor’s Christmas Cheer Fund last Friday distributed food worth more than $3 million to charities that are taking care of the vulnerable members of society such as the elderly and orphans.

The beneficiaries included Ekuphumuleni Old People’s Home, John Smale Children’s Home, Luveve Training School for Girls, Luveve Remand Home, Emthunzini WeThemba, Entembeni Old Peoples Home and Thorngrove Infectious Diseases Hospital.

The institutions received flour, cooking oil, mealie meal, soaps, sugar, rice, sugar beans, powdered milk, salt, mazoe, biscuits, tea bags, soya chunks and mahewu.

The Mayor Councillor Solomon Mguni said every year the fund raises money to buy goodies for inmates at these institutions during the festive season.

“The target last year was to raise US$100 000 but we managed to raise $2,8 million and US$4 425,” said Clr Mguni.

He commended companies, individuals and organisations that donated to the fund in cash and kind.

Acting Superintendent of Luveve Training School for Girls, Mrs Ntokozo Ndlovu said the donation will bring cheer to the girls.

“We are happy that the city fathers are remembering us though its after Christmas,” said Mrs Ndlovu.

She said for years the home has been a recipient of the Mayor’s Cheer Fund .

Mrs Clara Nhare, a nurse at Entembeni Old People’s Home said the donation was a major boost to the home’s food supplies.

“May God bless all the hands that give as we depend on donations to take care of the elderly,” said  Mrs Nhare.

Mrs Skholiwe Ncube from Scripture Union Zimbabwe under the Thuthuka project said the Fund has been supporting the home for years now. — @ReeSibanda
