Sikhumbuzo Moyo in Nyamandlovu
THE Bulawayo-Nyamandlovu-Tsholotsho (BUNYATSO) taxis association has welcomed the launch of the Tsholotsho Road Rehabilitation Initiative, saying the programme will help address challenges that have affected transport operators due to the deteriorating state of the road.
The community-driven initiative was launched at Nyamandlovu Business Centre today by Matabeleland North Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution Richard Moyo, bringing together Government officials, traditional leaders, residents and other stakeholders.
Speaking on behalf of BUNYATSO, Mr Parliament Mlingo said the poor condition of the Bulawayo-Tsholotsho Road had increased operational costs for transport operators, with vehicles frequently requiring repairs after being damaged by potholes.
“This is a massive development for the district and for us as transport operators. Our cars were constantly breaking down, which naturally chewed into our profits, but with this programme, it will improve the ease of doing business for us,” said Mr Mlingo.
He said the initiative demonstrated what communities could achieve when they worked together towards addressing challenges affecting their areas.
“This is a true demonstration of the saying ilizwe lakhiwa ngabanikazi balo (a country is built by its owners). Communities can make a difference when they come together,” he said.
Mr Mlingo said a reliable road network was critical for the growth of the transport sector and expressed optimism that the rehabilitation project would improve operations along the route.
“Transport business thrives with a proper road network, and we are now on the road towards that,” he said.
The Bulawayo-Tsholotsho Road is a key link between Tsholotsho and Bulawayo, serving thousands of commuters, businesses, farmers and motorists who rely on the route daily.
The rehabilitation initiative was spearheaded by members of the Tsholotsho community led by Botswana-based businessman Mr Cephas Tshuma, who mobilised residents, businesses and other stakeholders to contribute towards the project.
The programme has received support from various organisations, including the Zimbabwe National Road Administration (Zinara), which has pledged fuel assistance towards the rehabilitation works.
The project is expected to improve connectivity, reduce vehicle maintenance costs and enhance the movement of people and goods between Tsholotsho and Bulawayo.
