A 48-YEAR-OLD Bulawayo motorist has appeared in court for fatally knocking down a pedestrian in a hit-and-run accident.

Gillan Gumbo of Old Lobengula suburb, pleaded guilty to culpable homicide charges when he appeared before Western Commonage magistrate Mr Jeconia Prince Ncube. He was remanded in custody to October 15 for sentencing.

The prosecutor, Ms Cathrine Kuzu, told the court that the incident occurred on September 29 along a road leading to the Caravan area in Cowdray Park. Gumbo was driving a Nissan Caravan (registration number AHA 1457) when he struck a pedestrian who was attempting to cross the road.

“After hitting the victim, the accused did not stop at the accident scene, leaving the pedestrian lying on the ground,” said Ms Kuzu.

Witnesses pursued Gumbo, apprehended him, and handed him over to police. The victim, whose name was not disclosed in court, later died upon admission at Mpilo Central Hospital.
