THE City of Bulawayo has joined the Esat family and the wider community in mourning the death of prominent businessman and former councillor Mr Mohamed Esat, who died on Sunday at the age of 80.
Mr Esat, who served as Ward One councillor from 1995 to 2003, is being remembered as a distinguished businessman, philanthropist and community leader whose contributions left a lasting impact on Bulawayo’s socio-economic development.
During his tenure in council, Mr Esat served on several key committees, including the Finance and Development, Audit, Environmental Management and Engineering Services, Future Water Supplies and Water Action committees, where he contributed to policy formulation and service delivery.
Bulawayo Town Clerk Mr Christopher Dube in a statement on behalf of Bulawayo, paid tribute to the late businessman, describing him as a visionary leader whose commitment to the city’s growth extended beyond the boardroom and council chambers.
“The City of Bulawayo has lost one of its distinguished sons. Mr Mohamed Esat dedicated his life to the service of the city through business, public service and philanthropy. His contributions as a councillor and businessman helped shape Bulawayo’s development and transformed the lives of many through employment creation and community empowerment,” said Mr Dube.
“He served the city with distinction during his time as a councillor and his legacy will continue to inspire future generations. On behalf of His Worship the Mayor, Senator David Coltart, councillors, management and staff of the City of Bulawayo, we extend our deepest condolences to the Esat family during this difficult time. May his soul rest in eternal peace,” he said
The local authority said Mr Esat’s business ventures, particularly Esats Shops, became a household name in Bulawayo, providing essential services while creating employment opportunities that benefited countless families.
Beyond business, Mr Esat played an active role in several professional and development institutions, including serving as a member of the Local Authorities Pension Fund Board of Trustees between 1996 and 1999.
He also served in various professional bodies, among them the Bulawayo Publicity Association.
His contributions to the country’s liberation struggle were recognised at Independence in 1980 when he received a certificate acknowledging his role in the liberation of Zimbabwe.
The City of Bulawayo said Mr Esat would be remembered for championing inclusive development and making a lasting contribution to the city’s economic and social landscape.
He is survived by his family.
