Imbongi Poetry Festival is set to run from April 2 to April 4 in Bulawayo. Thabiso Daudo Phiri, 22, the co-founder of Red Carpet Media & Entertainment the production company that is behind the festival expressed hope that people will welcome the initiative. “As Red Carpet Media and Entertainment we’re looking forward to holding a successful festival with the preparations that we’re making working towards our theme which is #Word.

“The theme is all about poetry and spreading the word about things that affect us on a daily basis.

“Ntando Van Moyo is doing well with his Mahlekisa Comedy Club that’s dedicated to comedians and now they’re celebrating their 2nd anniversary which may not seem like an achievement but it actually is,” Phiri said.

He added that the festival is going to bring poets from all over the city to present their acts.

The writer said they will be using three venues and his team was working on getting the performances recorded so that those who cannot make it to the festival will be able to see how the poets performed on video.

“The venues that we will be using are Indaba Book Café and Marshie’s Restaurant.

“We’re yet to confirm one more venue and issue an announcement. We will also have recordings of the performances by the poets because it’s important for them when they’re building their portfolios to have these videos.

“At the moment we’ve not received any sponsors and we’re working on a budget from our own pockets,” Phiri said.

He is a student at Midlands State University and an intern at Amakhosi Culture Centre.

He has written a number of plays including the Generation of Bondage which saw him nominated for best playwright at Inxusa last year.

The awards, however, did not happen.
