BULAWAYO POLICE: SAFE STREETS CORNER Every child deserves protection

AFTER the Zimbabwe Republic Police Victim Friendly Unit (VFU) recently raised alarm over cases of sexual abuse involving children, Bulawayo police spokesperson Inspector Nomalanga Msebele has appealed to parents and communities to strengthen everyday measures that can keep youngsters safe.

Inspector Msebele said protecting children should not be left to parents alone, but must become a shared responsibility for neighbours, schools, churches and the wider community.

“We encourage parents to build trusting relationships with their children so that they feel safe to report anything that makes them uncomfortable. Listen to them without judging or blaming them. A child who knows they will be believed is more likely to speak out before abuse continues,” she said.

She also urged parents to be mindful of who has access to their children.

“Know the adults who spend time with your children, whether they are relatives, neighbours, family friends or other caregivers. Do not ignore sudden changes in your child’s behaviour, fearfulness or reluctance to be around certain people.

These could be signs that something is wrong,” said Inspector Msebele. She encouraged communities to create safer neighbourhoods by looking out for children walking to and from school, challenging suspicious behaviour and reporting concerns before crimes occur.

“No child should suffer in silence. If you suspect abuse, report it immediately. Early reporting helps us protect victims, investigate thoroughly and bring offenders to justice,” she said.

Inspector Msebele reminded survivors and their families that help is available through the Zimbabwe Republic Police Victim Friendly Unit, while organisations such as Childline Zimbabwe, Musasa Project and other support services

also offer counselling, protection and assistance.

“Together, we can create communities where every child feels safe, protected and valued. Protecting our children begins with vigilance, compassion and speaking out,” she said.
