One of the athletes, Tatenda Nyandoro who spoke on behalf of the team yesterday said they had trained hard for the competition and as such they were definitely gunning for gold.
“We have worked hard at training for these Games and I promise we are going to make Bulawayo proud by bringing gold medals home,” he said.
Nyandoro thanked Raj Modi, the Bellevue Spar owner who is sponsoring the team.
Sport and Recreation Commission (SRC) media and marketing general manager David Simba also said he was confident the team was going to do well. He said the team which was camped at Hillside Primary School from 5 April, had trained very hard for the games.
“The team will definitely do the province proud as they have been in camp since Thursday last week and they underwent intense training,” Simba said.
These sentiments were echoed by Bhekuzulu Khumalo the Nust sports science lecturer who has been assisting in training. Khumalo has an appreciation for sport of people with disabilities following a training stint in Belgium and Scotland four years ago.
“Our chances are much better than last year when we got silver. This year the selections were done from district level so the team is made up of the province’s cream of athletes,” he said.
Apart from Bellevue Spar, other sponsors are RMS which provided a truck for ferrying equipment, Eatc College and Dickies Restaurant providing food, Astra Paints, Jasbro and CMED who assisted in various capacities.
Meanwhile, the official send-off ceremony for the team was held at Nkulumane Shopping Complex on Monday and the event was graced by the SRC chief executive officer for the games and also sponsor Modi and the provincial education director Dan Moyo.
