The competition will be open to members of the public. During the marathon, participants will be encouraged to talk about problems afflicting the community like domestic violence.
Instructor Edson Dube said he was inviting members of the public to the gym for the awareness campaign that will have representatives from Musasa Project, Women’s Affairs as well as provincial representatives from Matabeleland North, Matabeleland South and Midlands
Dube said the representatives will take turns to educate people on the different types of abuse against the girl child as well as domestic violence. He said they will also impart knowledge on how parents could detect abuse of their children.
Participation at the event being hosted specifically for women and girls would be free.
“Our gym will be open on Independence Day to allow people to celebrate this special day with our mothers and the girl child in mind because without them we could never have attained this Independence,” he said.
Dube said the gym deliberately timed the girl child campaign to coincide with the Independence Day celebrations in order to highlight the importance of emancipating the girl child from all forms of abuse at a time the nation is celebrating freedom from colonial abuse.
He said the nation should fight girl child abuse with the same determination it had when it fought colonialism.
“The girl child should not be discriminated against because she is able to do what the boy child can do so the two should be treated the same,” said Dube.
