AFTER a bruising first half and a short breather, the 2025 Archer Clothing Rugby League explodes back into life this Saturday at Hartsfield Rugby Grounds, and with it, fresh rivalries, fierce tackles and unfinished business.
Following a two week mid season break after five weeks of pulsating action, Bulawayo’s flagship rugby competition resumes with five fixtures across the men’s and women’s divisions at the city’s ceremonial home of the sport.
Only one match was played during the interval, a solitary clash between Western Suburbs Panthers and Mahogany Bulls, but this weekend brings a full fixture list as teams return refreshed and refocused.
Tournament director and Bulawayo Metropolitan Rugby Football Board (BMRFB) secretary George Hlatshwayo, confirmed the restart and said the pause allowed players and coaches to regroup.
“After we concluded five weeks of intense rugby action, we took a two week mid season break to give the teams a well deserved breather,” said Hlatshwayo.
“It was time for them to recharge, regroup and refocus their goals for this season. All the teams showcased commitment, sportsmanship and passion for the game, which we all love.
“This Saturday, we are getting back to action and I am certain we will see even more thrilling matches and outstanding performances.
We’re confident all the teams have had enough time to recuperate and are eager to get back. We’re looking forward to what promises to be an entertaining second half.
We wish all the best to the teams as they forge ahead in their campaigns.”
In the women’s division, log leaders Matabeleland Warriors take on third placed Bulldogs in the day’s opening fixture at noon, while second placed Matabeleland Lions square off against Western Suburbs Panthers half an hour later.
The men’s championship kicks off at 1pm, also with Bulldogs and Warriors battling it out, before Mahogany Bulls meet Western Suburbs Panthers at 2:30pm.
The main event of the day, and arguably the most anticipated clash of the weekend, sees defending champions Old Miltonians (OMs) face Highlanders at 4pm.
OMs are the only unbeaten side so far this season and sit comfortably atop the standings after six weeks.
Gate charges remain US$1 for general entry and US$2 for access to the shade.
