Bulawayo set for Urban Grooves revival

Tawanda Mauchaza of the MIC- A-BLAZE studio will be working with Sani Makhalima on the project.

In an interview, Mauchaza said this project would pull talented musicians from both cities to work together.

“I got into the music industry way back in 2001.

“While in the industry I realised that it was not easy and a lot of talented up-and-coming musicians dropped out,” he said.

Mauchaza said many up-and-coming musicians left the scene because the local audience was not appreciating their music.

“From 2001, I have recorded a lot of albums that we sent to our local stations for air play.

“But in return most of these albums never got a chance to be played on air,” he said.

Mauchaza said his project seeks to help emerging musicians to work with artistes who have made their names in the industry.

“We have a lot of talented guys in Bulawayo who simply need exposure.

“To achieve this goal we are targeting well established musicians from Harare to work with these guys,” he said.

Mauchaza said they have recorded a couple of singles that feature big guys who include Sani Makhalima and Tererai Mugwadi.

“We can say the project has already kicked off as we have managed to record Sani Makhalima with Webster Manjoro a.k.a Mzimba on their single that is being played on radio,” he said.

Mauchaza said they have also recorded Tererai Mugwadi with Felix Debwe a.k.a Centre Party.

“As a recording studio we are fighting hard to convince more guys to record with our Bulawayo musicians.

“As we speak we are still negotiating with other musicians to join this project,” he said.

Mauchaza said Harare musicians should emulate Maskiri’s spirit of working together with other musicians.

“Maskiri has been instrumental in this project as he has linked us to some of his friends back in Harare who are also musicians.

“This is the spirit that we want as musicians who have been in the industry for more than a decade now,” he said.

Aliceous Musimbe aka Maskiri echoed the same sentiments, urging musicians to unite with a common goal of improving the quality of local music.

“We want to create our own identity in terms of music and this can only be achieved by working together.

“Look at Zambians they have managed to produce good music through unity and working together,” he said.
