Bulawayo shines at tourism expo

THE Bulawayo School of Hospitality and the Bulawayo Publicity Association made a mark at the just ended Sanganai/Hlanganani World Tourism Expo in Harare where they scooped top awards.

The two institutions were named the winner and second runner up in the Best Training Institution and Best Publicity Association Stand respectively.

Harare Polytechnic College and Chinhoyi University of Technology were named second and first runners-up respectively in the Best Training Institution.

In the Best Publicity Association Stand, Kariba Publicity Association was named the winner while Harare Publicity Association was the first runner-up.

The awards were meant to honour luminaries for their outstanding contribution to promoting growth and development of tourism in the country.

Meikles Hotel won the best innovative mystery basket dish award while Fusion Restaurant was the first runner-up.

The hotel also scored a first in the best accommodation stand category beating Rainbow Tourism Group and Mbizi Game Park and Lodges who were crowned first and second runners-up respectively.

The best culinary training institution went to Culinary Arts Academy while Dynamic Management Consultancy and Harare Polytechnic were first and second runners-up respectively.

The best public institution stand award was scooped by the Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe while the Department of Immigration and the National Museums and Monuments of Zimbabwe were first and second runners-up respectively.

The best tour operator stand award went to Zambezi Explorer while Ngamo Safaris and Wild Horizons were on first and second positions respectively in the category.

Air Zimbabwe scooped the best airline stand ahead of Air Botswana and Air Malawi who came first and second.

Sandalwood Lodge was named the winner in the Best First Time Exhibitor Stand category while Bushman Rock was the first runner-up outclassing the Seventh Day Medical Expo.

The best international stand award was scooped by the India Tourism Board while South Africa’s Dr Kenneth Kaunda District was the first runner-up with both Botswana and Zambia Tourism Boards claiming the second runner-up position.

India Tourism Board also scooped the best overall stand category.

Love for Africa emerged the winner in the best travel agent stand category while Coordinating Zimbabwe was crowned the first runner-up.

Air Zimbabwe also scooped the first prize in the Best Zimbabwe Stand and walked away with a shield resembling the Harare International Airport conical tower.

The Best Print Media Reporter awards went to Zimtravel’s Tendai Mbirimi and Financial Gazette’s Shame Mukoshori who each received $3,000 for their wide and extensive coverage of the tourism sector.
