A tournament honouring the founding fathers of the Bulawayo Social Soccer League, including the iconic Chris Mhlanga, will kick off at the quarter-final stage at Khami Prison Grounds on May 25.
The Founders Cup, named in tribute to league pioneers such as Mhlanga, began with 60 teams divided across three pools.
After weeks of intense social football action, only eight teams remain in contention for the prestigious title.
The remaining sides have been drawn into two groups for the quarter-finals, with matches expected to bring excitement to Khami Prison Grounds.
Formed in the early 1980s (1982–83), the Bulawayo Social Soccer League was established to unite retired footballers and foster community spirit through the beautiful game.
Quarter-finalists include BCT, Fundukulinda, Stars, Makhandeni United, Iminyela Timers, Tigers, Glenkara, and Bombers.
The clash between Makhandeni United and defending champions Iminyela Timers has been dubbed “The Real Battle for Dominance” due to the fierce rivalry between the two sides.
Makhandeni United thrashed Patapata 7–0 in their last match, while Iminyela Timers edged past Fireworks 3–2.
Fundukulinda, who cruised past Pirates with a 5–1 victory, will face BCT, while Glenkara are set to take on Bombers, who narrowly defeated Strive 1–0.
Organisers say the tournament is about more than just football — it’s about unity, legacy, and uplifting communities.
“The league aims to bring people together and fight drug abuse through sport,” said Linda Bhebhe, vice secretary-general of the Bulawayo Social Soccer League.
“Last year, we made a donation to Entembeni Old People’s Home, and some of our members made generous contributions to the elderly and vulnerable,” she said.
Bhebhe also highlighted that the league fosters business networks among players and supporters, making it a valuable platform for both social and economic empowerment.
