The City of Bulawayo is requesting information from residents and stakeholders on the location of lidless, damaged and hazardous sewer manholes citywide.
In a statement, town clerk Mr Christopher Dube, said the manholes pose significant danger and hazard to the public and also lead to an increase in the number of sewer chokes and blockages.
“This appeal is in line with the ongoing exercise being carried out by the City to identify, map and repair the damaged manholes and thereafter reintroduce lids,” reads the statement.
“Residents are requested to bring such information to the attention of their area Councillors of the City of Bulawayo customer contact centre on 0774 668 632 (WhatsApp only), 02922 71290 for all networks or email [email protected].
“For clarity and ease of identification, residents are advised to indicate the specific locations of these manholes to the nearest physical address,” reads the statement.
“Residents are also urged not to tamper with municipal sewer infrastructure between suburbs by opening manholes for either irrigating bush gardens or disposal of unwanted garbage as such activities lead to the exposure of the public, especially children, to the danger of falling into the open manholes.”
