Bulawayo team to represent Zim at Africa event

BULAWAYO-based women’s basketball side, Lakers, will represent Zimbabwe in the African Club Championships to be held in Mozambique from November 15-24.

Lakers were runners-up behind Angola’s Interclube in the just ended Zone 6 Basketball Club Championships. Lakers were hammered 30-122 by the Angolan side at the Zimbabwe International Trade Fair (ZITF) last weekend.

The finalists are the only clubs in the women’s category of the Zone 6 clubs to go through to the African Club Championship.

The tournament which also involved teams from Mozambique and Malawi was dominated by Angolan teams.

In the men’s final, Primeiro de Agosto beat their Angolan counterparts Petro de Luanda 90-77 and the two will take part in the Afro League on dates yet to be announced.

The third place play-off saw Mozambique’s Ferroviário de Beira beating their countrymen Ferroviário de Maputo 78-69.

Harare City Hornets narrowly lost 65-64 to Brave Hearts of Malawi to finish sixth in the men’s section, while the Foxes of Harare and Malawi’s Central Knights’ match wasn’t played due to injuries.

In the ladies’ section, Zimbabwe’s Vixens lost 78-39 to Malawi’s Brave Hearts in the third place play-off.
