THE city’s tennis scene is set for increased activity in the upcoming Bulawayo Open and Tarryn-Leigh De Souza tournaments, which are expected to give opportunities to players seeking greater exposure.
These two prominent events are expected to allow participants to showcase their skills and gain valuable experience in the game.
First on the line-up will be the Bulawayo Open scheduled for April 4-7, with the Tarryn-Leigh De Souza following on April 7-10.
Tennis Zimbabwe (TZ) selector and Bulawayo Metropolitan Tennis Board member Thesly Mufunda told Zimpapers Sports Hub that both competitions are open to all players from around the country.
Mufunda said after these competitions, the players will take part in the Midlands Open, Harare Open and the Manicaland Open.
He said as tennis administrators in Bulawayo, they were proud that their junior players had done well in continental competitions.
“In the past two weeks, we have seen players taking part in competitions such as the Emakhandeni Tennis Club Invitational tournament. We have seen our juniors doing quite well in international events and at the Africa Junior Championships. We saw how Kuzivaishe Chapepa performed as she finished in fourth position at the Africa Junior Championships.”
As the Bulawayo Metropolitan Tennis Board prepares for their two events, Tennis Zimbabwe (TZ) has announced that it will be rolling out the Junior Tennis Initiative, targeting young players during the school holiday.
TZ, in conjunction with the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education, will hold a players and coaches’ programme led by JTI national coordinator Linsent Chitiyo.
Chitiyo told Zimpapers Sports Hub of their intention to use upcoming provincial tournaments as platforms to reach out to more young players.
“We will definitely be supportive of these tournaments. This is where players are groomed. These tournaments make it easy for national rankings and national selectors as that is where players are chosen for national assignments”- @NkosieLegend.
