THE Bulawayo City Council (BCC) is set to honour residents who are aged 100 years and above as a way of celebrating long life and acknowledging their contribution to the development of the city.

BCC senior Public Relations Officer, Mrs Nesisa Mpofu, said the International Day of Older persons will be celebrated on October 1.

“The programme seeks to acknowledge the existence of Centenarians in the City by spending time with them and to also celebrate their longevity.

“This is because council recognises that life is a gift and we want to celebrate that,” she said.

“The elderly have a wealth of information, wisdom and knowledge.

“They have contributed to the development of the City and we want to thank God for the gift of life.”

Mrs Mpofu said the programme is a community initiative where BCC is partnering with independent organisations in celebrating the centenarians.

“The City of Bulawayo has been having this initiative for the past two years since 2017 in partnership with the Bulawayo Shoe Box project and residents,” she said.

In a notice on Tuesday, the local authority called on residents to submit names and contact details of those aged 100 years and above to be honoured.

“Do you know anyone who is 100 years and older? Are they a resident of the City of Bulawayo? Send their name, address, date of birth and contact details to us by Monday September 23, 2019.

“We would like to celebrate the elderly community in a special way,” read the notice.—@michellzvanyanyan2
