TO navigate various administrative challenges and maintain stability in leadership, the Bulawayo City Council has announced the extension of Town Clerk, Mr Christopher Dube’s employment contract by another year after his term in office ended at midnight on September 30.

Mayor, Councillor David Coltart, announced the development in a statement yesterday. He said the decision follows a formal communication from the Local Government Board regarding a request for the extension.

“The City of Bulawayo has received communication from the Local Government Board acceding to the council’s request regarding the extension of the contract of the Town Clerk of the City of Bulawayo, Mr Christopher Dube,” said Clr Coltart.

BULAWAYO City Council has made a dramatic turnaround on its shocking resolution to only allow debit cards bearing the name of the house owner to be used in the payment of rates and water bills.

“Consequently, therefore, residents, stakeholders and members of the public are advised that the service tenure for the Town Clerk has been extended by a further one year with effect from 1 October 2024.

“In line with conventional practice on succession planning, the City of Bulawayo will commence the recruitment of the successor Town Clerk in due course in accordance with the enabling legislation.”

The council has said the announcement aligns with its commitment to effective governance and management, ensuring that the town clerk can continue overseeing critical city operations.

Stakeholders and members of the public have since been advised of this development, reflecting a proactive approach to Local Government leadership, it said.

Last week, the local authority announced that the Local Government Board had not renewed Mr Dube’s contract.

“Whereas council had resolved (February 7, 2024) to extend the contract subject to approval by the Local Government Board, a request of approval was sent to the Local Government Board on 25th March 2024. However, by the end of day on 30 September 2024 such approval had not been obtained,” said the local authority at the time.
