Bulawayo vendors welcome spring clean initiative

BULAWAYO vendors and traders have commended the Bulawayo City Council (BCC) for coming up with the “Big Spring-Cleaning Week” that is making the city clean.

The spring cleaning week which started on Monday and will end tomorrow has been successful in some places that were cleaned in the past days.

A vendor at the corner of Fifth Avenue and George Silundika Street Ms Susan Mpofu applauded council for the decision because their environment is now clean.

“We used to sweep the surrounding place with our brooms before we set our stuff since we cannot operate on a dirty place but now the area has been cleaned,” she said.

Another vendor, who identified herself only as Mrs Mlalazi said she had been losing business as customers avoided the area as it was filthy, but things have changed.

“I have been seeing the council workers moving around here and I’m happy that they carried out a great job as we are now operating in an environment that is clean from litter and rotten vegetables that brought an unhealthy environment since flies would breed there,” she said.

“I lost customers because they felt unsafe to buy food near a huge heap of litter.”
Mr Themba Ncube said even though vendors are accused of dumping litter and vegetables that are rotten in lanes between buildings in town, it’s not always the case.

“Some residents who stay in the city centre come and throw their litter on top of those heaps and I suspect they come at night because some of the litter thrown are pampers,” he said.

The ongoing spring cleaning week is being done under the motto “Taking pride at home, school or at work begins with you”. –@NomqheleC
