THE duo of Kudzaishe Mazviro and Aprronage Ngorima will leave the country tomorrow to participate in the African Under-21 Beach Volleyball Championships to be held in Morocco.

The tournament will get under way in the city of Rabat on Friday with all beach volleyball playing countries in attendance.

William Mazviro, who is the coach, says preparations have sailed smoothly and he is confident of positive performance from the team.

“We will leave for South Africa on Wednesday and catch a flight to Morocco. The competition we are going for is a qualifier for the World Championships which will be held in Thailand in November.

“The whole of Africa will be there. We are going to be representing the Zone Six Region with the likes of Botswana and Zambia. Powerhouses such as Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia will be taking part,” said Mazviro.

He added: “The boys have been giving it their all in training and we expect them to do well. This work has been going on for a while now and going for competition of this magnitude is a sign of reaping the rewards of hard work,” said Mazviro the former Bulawayo Volleyball Association chairman and one time setter.

Beach volleyball is a team sport played by two players on each side of a sand court divided by a net.

The objective of the game is to hit the ball with hands or arms only over the net into the opponent’s court until the other side is unable to return the ball or the ball heads outside of the court lines.

Each rally secures one point. In Zimbabwe, the game is largely played on artificial beach surfaces as the only natural sand beach is in Binga.

The Binga sand beach is located on the Zambezi River between the mountains, and Matabeleland North Province is believed to be sitting on millions of dollars in untapped tourism opportunities.

Sport has also played a big role in marketing the place.

The Zimbabwe Volleyball Association (ZVA) has also taken advantage of the site in Binga by hosting beach volleyball events there.

While other provinces have to settle for artificial set ups for beach volleyball, Matabeleland North has the privilege of using a natural beach. — @innocentskizoe
