Bulawayo woman exploits Netone’s One money technical glitch

A Bulawayo woman has been arraigned before Bulawayo magistrates court after exploiting a technical glitch in Netone’s OneMoney system and stealing more than Zig 100 000.

Clara Ncube (32) was sentenced to 18 months imprisonment with six months suspended on the condition she does not commit a similar offense. The other six months were suspended on condition she restitutes the complainant ZiG24 400. The remaining six months were suspended on condition she performs community service.

In a statement, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) said the incident occurred sometime during the period beginning from the 10th of May to the 13th of May 2024.

“Clara Ncube (32) from Bulawayo was arraigned before the Tredgold Regional Magistrates’ Court facing theft charges after exploiting a technical glitch in NetOne’s OneMoney system to steal ZWG136 442. The incident occurred sometime during the period beginning from the 10th of May to the 13th of May 2024, when the accused person took advantage of a system error that allowed mobile money to be transferred without corresponding deductions.

The NPA said she executed multiple transactions, each below the transactional limit of ZWG2 400 to avoid detection and NetOne has since rectified the glitch. The total value stolen was ZWG136 442 and ZWG112 042 was recovered,” reads the statement.

“The accused person was sentenced to 18 months’ imprisonment of which 6 months was suspended on condition she does not commit a similar offence, 6 months was suspended on condition that she pays ZWG24 400 as restitution to the complainant, 6 months on condition that the offender completes 211 hours of community service at Drill Hall CID Minerals,” reads the statement.
