A 38-YEAR-OLD Bulawayo woman has appeared in court for allegedly assaulting her daughter to death before attempting to report the matter as a sudden death case.
Rosemary Gumbo of Upper Rangemore suburb appeared before Western Commonage magistrate Mr Jeconia Prince Ncube facing a murder charge.
She was remanded in custody to June 5.
Prosecuting, Ms Cathrine Kuzu told the court that on May 5, the accused allegedly physically assaulted her daughter, Nonhlanhla Bhebhe, resulting in injuries that later led to her death.
The court heard that the deceased sustained bruises on the forehead, above the left eye, on the right eye and on the left arm.
Ms Kuzu said after the child’s death, the accused person reported the matter to the police as a sudden death case.
“Upon attending the scene, the police discovered that the deceased had signs of physical abuse, as evidenced by multiple whip marks all over her body,” said Ms Kuzu.
“The deceased had bruises on the forehead, above the left eye, on the right eye and on the left arm, and no official report had been made regarding the injuries.”
The court heard that the observations made by police officers at the scene raised suspicion, leading to further investigations. The accused was subsequently arrested.
