RUGBY, respect, and reflection will take centre stage at Hartsfield this Saturday as Bulawayo Women’s Rugby hosts a spirited Pre-Fathers’ Day celebration with a powerful message for both men and women.

Running under the theme “There is no father without a mother,” the event aims to celebrate men, both within and outside rugby circles, while also serving as a fundraising platform for the Bulawayo Women’s Rugby Board.

A lively line up of activities awaits participants, including Zumba, sprint relays, 400-metre races, foot and face massages, among many others.

To top it off, all registered participants will receive appreciation gifts. Women attending will also engage under a bold sub-theme: “The Power of a Submissive Woman.”

Speaking to Zimpapers Sports Hub, Bulawayo Women’s Rugby chairperson Musawenkosi Mpofu explained that the event aims to highlight values both on and off the pitch.

“Why ‘The Power of a Submissive Woman’? We are tough in the field and continue to carry that toughness into our homes. Our agenda is to groom girls and women in rugby to differentiate and embrace the areas that  don’t require toughness, like the home.

“Submission is the key to ‘tame’ a man. We want equal opportunities, but without submission, we can’t win,” said Mpofu.

She added that the day is not only about honouring men, but also about empowering women through key life skills.

“Our agenda is to teach ladies the value and reasons behind submission, raise funds for our teams, and help them start income generating projects that will create employment and enhance self sustenance. We’re also focusing on personal hygiene, grooming, and etiquette in and outside rugby,” she said.

Mpofu called on the public to support the open event.

“Charity begins at home, so we are calling on all our brothers, fathers, uncles, friends, and colleagues in rugby. All stakeholders, well wishers, sponsors, donors, partners, fans, communities, families, and relatives are invited,” she added.

Bulawayo Women’s Rugby continues to advocate for empowerment and equal opportunities in the sport.

“People should know that rugby is for anyone and everyone hence the need for recognition,” said Mpofu.

The event will run concurrently with week three of the 2025 Archer Clothing Rugby League, also taking place at Hartsfield, the home of rugby. — @brandon_malvin
