BULAWAYO’s reigning champions Ajax handball club shot to the top of the national league standings in the first round of the league games played at United College of Education (UCE) last weekend.
The two-day event saw the teams chosen from winners of last year’s local leagues in each province battle it out for the top spot on the log.
The Mpopoma-based club took part in the league and recorded their first win against the varsity boys, Midlands State University (MSU). On the women’s side, Ajax managed to dodge bullets from the soldiers’ club, Black Rhinos who were edged by a goal.
On the next fixture, Ajax men’s team faced Thornhill Handball Club from Gweru and they again claimed victory.
The women played UCE and also never disappointed, managing to beat them with a very good margin of 14 goals.
On Sunday, it was an Ajax-Manyame affair with Manyame having two men’s teams and one female team.
First it was Ajax Handball Club against Manyame men and Ajax came out victorious and in the second fixture Manyame Queens faced Ajax Handball Club and it was a tightly contested game which ended in a draw.
To seal the games, Manyame Falcons men went head-to-head against Ajax in a tightly contested game which led to Ajax’s victory in the dying minutes by a goal.
