Frank Chirisa returns from African comedy tour with fresh fire

Comedian Frank Chirisa who hails from Bulawayo has returned home from another regional comedy tour with fresh experience, industry connections and renewed determination to raise the standard of local stand-up comedy.

The young funnyman spent a week performing across comedy stages in eSwatini and South Africa after his scheduled shows in Botswana were postponed, turning what could have been a setback into an opportunity to secure additional performances and deepen his exposure to the regional comedy circuit.

The latest tour is Chirisa’s second regional outing this year, further cementing his growing presence beyond Zimbabwe’s borders.

His tour kicked off in Mbabane, eSwatini, where he headlined Last Friday Gags and received a strong reception from the audience.
“The tour was amazing, I enjoyed performing comedy this past week. We started with Mbabane last week Friday. I headlined at Last Friday Gags and did so well, the audience loved me from the very first minute till the last. It goes down as one of my favourite comedy moments in 2026,” said Chirisa.

The comedian was, however, dealt a blow when shows he had been scheduled to perform at in Botswana were postponed. Rather than abandon the tour, Chirisa travelled to Johannesburg ahead of his planned engagements and sought opportunities to perform alongside comedians on the local circuit. That decision paid off, with the comedian managing to perform at five shows in Johannesburg, including a headlining slot at Monaco Extreme Comedy Wednesday hosted by Bexta.

“I spent the week in Johannesburg where I did five shows including a headlining spot at Monaco Extreme Comedy Wednesday hosted by Bexta. I was also part of Bioscope Sundays, Monday Night Comedy, Extreme Comedy Wednesdays, Comedy Connect, and Mzansi Comedy Club’s inaugural show where I met Lemogang Tsipa, who acted as Shaka Zulu in the famous Mzansi Magic TV Show Shaka iLembe,” he said.

Beyond the performances, the tour gave Chirisa an opportunity to interact with comedians operating in some of the region’s most active comedy markets. He shared stages with established names including Thabiso Mhlong, Mbali Gudazi, Bexta, Tsitsi Chiumya, Dillan Oliphant, Dakes Mathya and Rae DuPlooy, among others.

With his latest experience now in the bag, Chirisa is already preparing for another trip. The comedian is scheduled to travel to Cape Town, South Africa, where he will perform at various comedy clubs from September 15 to 25.

His continued movement across regional comedy stages reflects the growing appetite for Zimbabwean comedic talent and his ambition to establish himself as a formidable name on the African comedy circuit.
