THE Civil Protection Unit has started giving groceries and tents to Bulilima families whose homes were destroyed by floods recently.
Bulilima District Administrator Ethel Moyo said although the CPU committee had started rolling out a programme of assistance, more support was needed.
She said the committee was working on compiling a report of the affected homesteads saying some affected areas have not been covered.
At least 15 homes were destroyed by floods in Ndolwane, Mbimba, Huwana, Khame and Madlambuzi areas.

“We are assessing the damage as we are still trying to get to all the affected villages as some are inaccessible. We have managed to give tents to five families in Mbimba area which had their homesteads completely submerged in water,” Moyo said.

“We have also managed to get food assistance from the business community in Plumtree. The level of damage varies from area to area and we are prioritising the most affected areas.

“We are appealing for more assistance from well-wishers because people are living in great despair. Most of the people who were affected are vulnerable and this misfortune has come as a huge setback for them.”

Moyo said among the affected were child headed families who are struggling to make ends meet.
Dzilo Village close to Manzamnyama River which borders Tsholotsho area was the most affected after the river overflowed its banks and soaked homes.
Councillor for Ndolwane area, Ian Matiwaza, said most families were at risk of having their homes washed away should the rains continue.
