SHORTAGES of water in parts of Bulilima district in Matabeleland South province have forced local villagers to unite to drill and install a solar powered borehole.

The community of Ward 2 in Kandana recently mobilised funds to drill a borehole with a well-wisher coming on board in installing solar panels to enhance a modern borehole structure.

In the past they have been cases of diarrhoea in parts of Bulilima due to water collected from unhygienic points.  The unity by the community comes as the world on Friday commemorated the Global Handwashing Day which is an international handwashing promotion campaign to motivate and mobilise people around the world to improve their handwashing habits.

In an interview, leader of the project Mr Voti Maphosa said the borehole will serve over 180 homesteads.

“As a community of Kandana we sat down and saw the need of developing our area particularly in the issue of borehole as we have had challenges of water for years.

“In that manner we sat down and managed to source funding from community members locally and abroad to achieve this milestone which has benefited 180 homesteads in the area,” said Mr Maphosa.

Mr Maphosa said through his company Voti Solar Company that is based in South Africa, they chipped in with resources to set up a modern boreholes.

“I have in the past also assisted places like Ndiweni area and Makhulela with solar panels as it is time that we modernise our societies for the greater good,” said Mr Maphosa. — @mthabisi_mthire
