Bulawayo gave cultural ensemble Matojeni Melo-Maniacs a heartfelt send-off on Saturday night as fans packed the Chief’s Village Lounge for an intimate farewell concert ahead of the group’s much-anticipated European tour.
The event was more than a performance. It was a celebration of the ensemble’s journey and a show of appreciation to the city that has supported Matojeni since its formation in 2023. Besides celebrating the ensemble’s achievements, the farewell concert also served as a fundraiser to help cover travel expenses for the European tour. The group is scheduled to travel this Friday.
Breaking away from the usual artiste-fan divide, the group created a warm, interactive experience by personally welcoming guests with mocktails before escorting them to their seats. Throughout the evening, members mingled with supporters, posed for photographs, and shared conversations, creating an atmosphere that reflected the group’s strong bond with its audience.
Guests were also treated to a lavish meal prepared by celebrated chef Khumby, adding a touch of hospitality that complemented the night’s cultural showcase.
The concert opened with the group’s latest offering, Siyofik’eLondon, a fitting soundtrack as Matojeni prepares to take Zimbabwean culture to European audiences.
Guest of honour at the event, Jeys Marabini praised the ensemble for consistently championing Zimbabwean culture and wished them well on their international tour.
Speaking after the performance, the ensemble thanked Bulawayo for standing by them throughout their journey and for giving them an unforgettable farewell.
“We’re grateful to the people of Bulawayo for believing in us from the beginning, and for coming out in numbers to support us before we leave for Europe,” the group said.
They also acknowledged the support of Saimon “Mambazo” Phiri of Sabela Projects and Winya Sounds, crediting them and their teams for helping make the farewell concert a success.
“We’re so grateful to Saimon Mambazo Phiri of Sabela Projects, as well as Winya Sounds, who came on board and helped us bring our dream to life,” the group said.
