POLICE have launched investigations into an illegal fire that burnt down a Burnside mansion, destroying property worth US$500 000.
The inferno started at stand number 244 Arnold Way when occupants lit a fire to clear thickets for construction. The flames quickly spread and destroyed the neighbouring property.
Bulawayo Chief Fire Officer Mr Mhlangano Moyo said the fire got out of hand because it was started during the fire season which officially runs from July 31 to November 30 when burning is prohibited.
Deputy provincial police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Thandekile Ndlovu confirmed the case.
“Police is investigating a case of deliberately causing a fire which the perpetrator failed to extinguish resulting in damage to property,” she said.
She warned residents against reckless burning, reminding them it is a criminal offence.
“Community safety remains a shared responsibility and your cooperation in avoiding preventable hazards is vital in protecting lives and property,” she said.
Environmental Management Agency spokesperson Mrs Amkela Sidange revealed that since the start of the fire season, 419 fire incidents have been recorded, destroying more than 116 000 hectares of land.
“Although this is lower than the 1 856 fire incidents we recorded during the same period last year which destroyed over 490 000 hectares, it does not mean we need to relax. With rising temperatures, drying vegetation and windy conditions, alertness to fire risks is crucial,” she said.
