THE woman whose two children were burnt to death on Sunday, has been arrested.
Sibongile Mlilo of Montgomery Farm on the outskirts of Bulawayo, reportedly left the children aged three years and nine months alone as she escorted her boyfriend when tragedy struck.
One of the children was burnt beyond recognition after the room in which the two were sleeping caught fire at about 2AM.
Mandla Jere, father of the nine-month-old Mayibongwe, yesterday said Mlilo and her lover were detained at Bulawayo Central Police Station.
Jere and Mlilo had one child together as they met when she already had the three-year-old girl.
Mlilo and her lover according to Jere, were at Bulawayo Central Police Station but he could not establish what charges they were facing as he was not allowed to see them.
“She is at Central Police Station with her lover but I was not allowed to see them,” said Jere.
A neighbour who requested anonymity said police officers arrested Sibongile and her new boyfriend on Monday afternoon.
“We suspect they are still at the police station because there is still no one at the house,” said the neighbour.
Acting Bulawayo provincial police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Abednico Ncube could not be reached for comment as he was said to be out of the office the whole day.
Mayibongwe’s body was burnt beyond recognition while his three-year-old half-sister, Issah who sustained first degree burns, died hours later.
