Bus rank mbanje peddler spared jail

A police blitz targeting cross-border buses last week resulted in the arrest of a man who was selling twists of mbanje and rolling paper to commuters.
The man, Misheck Nyanyiwa, 46, of Mkoba in Gweru, was yesterday convicted on his own plea of guilty and sentenced to a suspended four months in prison by Gweru magistrate, Vimbai Makora.

Two months were suspended on condition that Nyanyiwa pays a fine of $100 while the other two were suspended on condition that he does not commit the same crime again within the next five years.

Prosecuting, Daniel Tafuma told the court that on Wednesday last week, at Kudzanayi Long Distance Bus Terminus in Gweru, some police officers were on an anti-smuggling operation.

Tafuma said the police officers searched cross border buses that were loading passengers at the terminus’ bays.

While still searching passengers’ goods, the police received a tip-off from some members of the public that Nyanyiwa was in possession of some dangerous drugs.

Acting upon the tip off, the police approached Nyanyiwa and conducted a body search.

They discovered 22 twists of dagga and a box of rolling paper in his pockets.

Nyanyiwa told the court that he wanted to sell the drug.
