The region was the only one that played with a branded Division One league from the country’s four.
Retail chain, Buscod Supermarkets, was said to be the sponsors of the league, which was won by Quelaton.
New West City director Tumediso Mokoena took the league’s management to task, saying the clubs were in the dark about the sponsorship.
“We played the whole season marketing Buscod after being told that they were our main sponsors. Now that the season is over, we have to get our rewards. Funny enough, we do not know how much the sponsor put into the league but we were made to believe that at the end of the season we were going to get something.
“It would have been better if they told us from the beginning that we do not have a sponsor for the league,” said Mokoena.
Another club, Emakhandeni Pirates said they used a lot of money during the season to travel for games and thought that the money realised from the sponsorship would be used for their registration.
“It is sad that there was no sponsor for the 2011 season. We thought that surviving relegation meant we were going to get something, which will cushion us especially in terms of registration but that is not the case. We hope next year there will be a sponsor and that will give us something more to play for.”
Some of the clubs that refused to be named challenged the executive to work hard and get a sponsor as they were enduring lots of costs. Contacted for comment,
Moyo said clubs were aware that there was no sponsorship”.
