The function, which will remain a memorable event in the minds of the children and staff, also saw the business community, which included Spar Supermarket, popular Chicago Sports Bar and Eden Supermarket donating groceries and clothes to the home.
Speaking during the function, Chicago Sports Bar director Mr Stern Manyiwa, who was representing other businesses, said the gesture was part of the Gokwe business community’s social responsibility programme aimed at assisting the needy.
“You know Gokwe is a small town, which is still growing but we have said as the business community we need to do something as a token of appreciation to the support we are getting from the surrounding community,” said Mr Manyiwa.
“We co-exist with people who are in needy in the society and hence our decision to plough back to the community.”
Mr Manyiwa said the business community chose to host the Christmas at St Agnes Children Home after learning of the challenges the home was going through. “We sat down and said as the business people in Gokwe, we should spare a thought for the less privileged. This children’s home has a lot of challenges in getting food and the general upkeep of the orphans. We then thought that it was wise to organise a special Christmas
party for the home,” he said.
Mr Manyiwa said the Gokwe business community would continue to support St Agnes Children’s Home and the other less-privileged in the town.
“This is the beginning of our long relationship with the children’s home. We will continue to chip in and assist in times of need,” he said.
The founder and superintendent of St Agnes Children’s Home, Reverend Lazarus Muyambi, commended the Gokwe business community for hosting a Christmas party for them.
