PROMINENT businessman Wicknell Chivayo (43), wife, Lucy “Lulu” Muteke, and four other people died yesterday when a helicopter they were travelling in crashed in Marondera Rural, Mashonaland East Province.
The helicopter, which had six occupants, crashed at around 5pm at a farm near Waddilove Mission.
The Government confirmed that there were no survivors in the crash, although police were yet to formally name the victims.
In an interview at the scene, family spokesperson Mr Herbert Chivayo said: “Yes, we confirm that Wicknell Chivayo and his wife have perished in this tragedy. I am told the helicopter had five occupants. The other three were the two pilots and Mr Chivayo’s aide.”
National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi also confirmed the helicopter crash last night.
“The ZRP confirms a plane crash in Marondera Rural area at 5pm this evening (last night). The aircraft had six occupants. More details will be released in due course as the scene is currently being attended,” Comm Nyathi said.
Pressed to identify the victims, Comm Nyathi said it was premature since the victims’ next of kin were yet to be informed.
Permanent Secretary for Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Mr Nick Mangwana also confirmed the fatal crash, saying it involved a high-profile businessman, passengers and two pilots.
“The Government wishes to confirm that a helicopter crash has occurred, involving one high-profile businessman, four passengers, and two pilots.
“Current information indicates that there were no survivors in this crash. The Zimbabwe Republic Police will confirm the names of the victims in due course.
“We extend our deepest condolences and prayers to the victims, their families, and their friends during this difficult time,” said Mr Mangwana.
The cause of the crash had not been established by last night.
Emergency services attended the crash scene as investigations into the cause of the accident got underway.
Mr Chivayo and Ms Muteke were married in a high-profile ceremony last year.
