Businessman jailed

A Highfield businessman has been jailed for four years after he was convicted of selling goods belonging to his six business partners.
Emmanuel Marewo (28) denied theft of trust property charges when he appeared before Mbare magistrate Ms Rebecca Takavadii.
The court, however, convicted him after the State proved its case beyond reasonable doubt.
Marewo was sentenced to seven years behind bars, but three years were suspended on condition of good behaviour.
Another year was set aside on condition he restitutes the six complainants before March 30 this year.
Passing sentence, Ms Takavadii said Marewo’s moral blameworthiness was very high and he had spent the better part of last year avoiding the complainants.
Prosecutor Mr Pheneas Yaso said a custodial sentence would meet justice in the case.
In mitigation, Marewo pleaded for leniency and promised to restitute the complainants the money he prejudiced them when he sold their foodstuffs.
The State proved that on different occasions last year, Marewo was given consignments to sell with the understanding that he would give them their money within a stipulated period. Marewo, however, converted the money to his own use.
The goods included mealie-meal and rice worth about US$4 000 but he only remitted US$730.
