A Harare businessman will spend three years in jail after Harare Magistrate Clever Tsikwa found him guilty of defrauding a local woman of $200 000 in a botched deal to import goods from South Africa.

Steven John Bass was initially sentenced to eight years in jail, but two years were suspended on condition of good behaviour.

Another three years were set aside on condition that Bass restitutes $160 000 before August 29, 2025.

According to the State, Bass approached the complainant in December 2021 with a business proposal to import goods from South Africa for resale in supermarkets.

Bass claimed that he had orders but needed capital. The complainant was convinced to invest $200 000 in the deal.

After receiving the complainant’s $200 000, Bass became evasive.

The complainant discovered the fraud and reported it, leading to Bass’ arrest.
