Prominent Bulawayo businessman Tafi Moyo who died on Monday morning will be buried at the Lady Stanley Cemetery in the city tomorrow. Moyo died at the age of 108 at Mater Dei Hospital due to old age related complications.
“We’ve set Saturday as the burial date. His body will be collected from Farley Funeral Services tomorrow (today) afternoon and his body will lie in state in Famona before burial the next day,” his son Lungile Moyo said.
He added that the burial service would be held at the Bulawayo Amphitheatre starting at 9AM. Earlier this week, Zanu-PF’s spokesperson Cde Simon Khaya Moyo said the liberation history of Zimbabwe cannot be narrated without the mention of Moyo as he was one of the founders of the nation’s liberation platform.
Cde Khaya Moyo said Moyo worked closely with the late Dr Joshua Nkomo and President Mugabe and other nationalists. “He has indeed left a legacy to be emulated by us and generations to come,” said Cde Khaya Moyo.
Zanu-PF Central Committee member Dr Sikhanyiso Ndlovu said Moyo supported nationalism before the formation of political parties.
He said Moyo’s thinking paralleled that of the likes of Kwame Nkrumah in the early 1950s.
“Even Dr Joshua Nkomo was mentored by people like Tafi Moyo. He supported the ANC from its formation in 1957, then the UNDP and later Zapu. He was one of the first black business people in Zimbabwe who introduced the chicken bus,” said Dr Ndlovu.
Bulawayo Mayor Martin Moyo described Moyo as a successful businessman who did not allow his status to isolate him from less privileged members of society.
He said Moyo had a passion for sport and education; financing a number of students and donating furniture to schools in his home area.
“In his political career, he was among those daring Zimbabweans who transported groups of guerrillas with their arms to various parts of the region and provided them with clothing and other necessary items.”
