A RUWA businesswoman lost US$150,000 which was inside a trunk hidden in a wardrobe in her bedroom.
Farai Mavhiya, 55, the managing director of Chisipo Consultancy, said she left the money at her home when she travelled on a business trip to Chegutu on Saturday.
Her maid, Josephine Mboneka, 33, remained behind at the house.
When she returned home on Sunday, at around 8pm, Mavhiya went straight to bed.
On Monday, she opened the trunk to try and access her money.
That was when she found out that the money had been stolen and someone had entered her bedroom using a duplicate key.
Another duplicate key was used to unlock the trunk.
The maid had been working at the house for three weeks.
The garden boy was off duty during that weekend.
One of Mavhiya’s children visited the house when she was in Chegutu.
Harare Provincial Police spokesperson, Inspector Luckmore Chakanza, confirmed the incident, urging residents to avoid keeping large sums of money in homes and at company premises.
“Police are investigating an unlawful entry and theft case involving US$150,000 in Ruwa,” Insp Chakanza said.
“It was observed that there was no forced entry into the bedroom or the trunk lock, and investigations are underway.”
