A MIDNIGHT tip-off turned into a major drug bust when police in Bulawayo swooped in on a Gwabalanda man and discovered a secret ganja farm right in his backyard!
Michael Silas (23), was caught red-handed early Friday morning when cops raided his wooden cabin and found a budding dagga operation that included over 100 plants and a box full of seeds.
According to a police report, at around 12:45 AM on 16 May, an anonymous call alerted authorities that Silas was cultivating dagga at his residence.

“Police reacted swiftly to the tip-off and found the accused sleeping in a wooden cabin at an in-fill stand in Gwabalanda,” confirmed Inspector Nomalanga Msebele, the Bulawayo police spokesperson. “A search was conducted and officers recovered a dagga plant about 50cm long and a matchbox full of seeds on top of a wardrobe.”
But that was just the beginning.

A further sweep of the yard led to a shocking discovery. A total of 103 dagga plants were flourishing in the garden. The suspect was immediately arrested and taken to Luveve Police Station , where he is now facing charges for unlawful cultivation of dangerous drugs.

“The total weight and value of the dagga is still being assessed,” said Insp Msebele. “We want to commend members of the public for playing a critical role in this arrest.”
She added: “We are not backing down in the fight against drugs and substance abuse. The community’s cooperation makes it harder for criminals to operate.”
Michael Silas’ dream of becoming a backyard botanist has gone up in smoke. Now he’ll have to explain his green thumb to the courts.
